Car scrap value: what sets the price
Most cars in Birmingham fetch between about £150 and £350 for scrap, made up of the car's weight at the current metal rate, its catalytic converter and any parts that can be reused.
Steel is only about a third of what most cars fetch, so your price moves far less than the metal headlines suggest. A car with its catalytic converter fitted and a complete engine and gearbox pays more than one without them.
When to scrap a car
Scrap your car when the repair costs more than the car is worth, or when it can no longer be driven legally. The usual cases are an MOT failure with a long list of work, a car that will not start and is not worth fixing, and an insurance write-off in category A or B, which cannot be repaired and which your insurer usually arranges to have scrapped. With category A the entire vehicle has to be crushed, and with category B the body shell has to be crushed but other parts can be salvaged. Inside Birmingham's Clean Air Zone, an older car that does not meet the standard costs £8 a day to drive, which is another reason people let one go. If you are applying for Birmingham City Council's scrappage grant, worth £2,000, £3,100 or £4,000 with the larger two partly paid as travel credit, the council must approve your application before the car is scrapped, and it needs a Certificate of Destruction from a registered authorised treatment facility, which you receive within 7 days.

Car scrap yards in Birmingham, and why we come to you
Use a licensed scrap metal dealer that sends the car to an Environment Agency authorised treatment facility and makes sure you get a Certificate of Destruction. Birmingham has 101 authorised vehicle recyclers within 10 miles of the city centre, more than Manchester, Leeds or London, so there is no shortage of buyers. Three things tell you a buyer is legitimate: a scrap metal licence, payment by bank transfer or cheque rather than cash, and a Certificate of Destruction after the car is scrapped.

What scrap car dealers do with your car
A scrapped car is taken to an authorised treatment facility, drained of its fuel, oil and other fluids, stripped of the parts that can be sold on, and the shell is crushed and recycled as metal. The facility issues the Certificate of Destruction, which tells DVLA the car no longer exists and is your proof that you handed it over.

Your questions answered
Who buys scrap cars in Birmingham?
We do: Rapid Scrap My Car Birmingham is a licensed scrap metal dealer buying cars and vans across Birmingham and the towns around it. Any licensed dealer has to check your ID, pay by bank transfer or cheque and use an authorised treatment facility, which is how you tell a real buyer from the rest.
What documents do I need to scrap my car in Birmingham?
You need photo ID, such as a photocard driving licence or a passport, a utility bill or bank statement from the last three months if your ID does not show your address, and the V5C logbook if you have it. The law makes every dealer check who they are buying from, so there is no way round the ID. Keep the yellow slip from the V5C and tell DVLA the car has been scrapped, or you can be fined £1,000. Any full months of tax left are refunded automatically.
Can I scrap my car if I still owe finance?
No, not without the lender's permission while the car is on hire purchase or conditional sale. Ask them for permission, or for a settlement figure and pay it to clear the agreement, and then you can scrap the car like any other.
Can I scrap my car without a registration document?
Yes. A Certificate of Destruction can be issued without a V5C, so the missing logbook does not stop the car being scrapped. Have photo ID and any paperwork that links you to the car ready, and we will tell you what else is needed. Then write to DVLA to tell them it has gone for scrap.
Does my car have to be free from damage?
No. Accident damage, rust, a missing part or a car that has been sitting for years all still scrap. The price reflects the weight and what can be reused, not the paintwork.
Can I scrap my car for cash in Birmingham?
No. Since 2013 no scrap dealer in England is allowed to pay cash for a car that is scrapped, so a dealer who pays cash for one is breaking the law. We pay by bank transfer on the day we collect.
Does it matter how much service history my car has?
No. A scrap price comes from the car's weight, its catalytic converter and its reusable parts, not from the stamps in the book. The only time history matters is if the car is good enough to sell rather than scrap.
Do I need to provide the keys for my car?
No. Hand them to the driver if you have them, and if they are lost, tell us when you book and we still collect the car.
